Well, it’s not the greatest news.
Brock Purdy was supposed to have surgery on Wednesday to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing elbow. That will not happen according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Purdy met with Dr. Keith Meister on Tuesday and agreed to have his surgery postponed due to inflammation in the elbow. The two will reconvene in March.
Purdy is still expected to be ready for the start of the 2023 regular season, but the news is not insignificant. At best, Purdy is expected to have a six-month recovery timeline if he doesn’t require Tommy John surgery. That would have put him available after the beginning of training camp. Now, he’ll be ready later than that if he’s able to have the surgery next month.
The regular season starts on September 7, meaning that Purdy probably won’t be available well before then. The delay will make the offseason more interesting at the quarterback position, as it’s now possible that Trey Lance will take a good portion of the team’s snaps during the preseason.
