One thing that was evident from Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch’s end-of-season presser: Jimmy Garoppolo won’t be back.
It doesn’t make much financial sense for the 49ers to try and keep Garoppolo around, especially with Trey Lance and Brock Purdy expected to compete for the starting job.
So, where could Garoppolo go? NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero joined Murph & Mac on Friday and provided his opinion on the situation.
One team that stands out? The Las Vegas Raiders.
“I think the Raiders are another team that’s a logical fit for Jimmy,” Pelissero said. “He’s got the connections there with Josh McDaniels and the GM Dave Zeigler. The teams you mentioned (Jets, Buccaneers) are certainly on that list.”
What he emphasized was the uncertainty of so many quarterback situations.
Derek Carr, Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers are in flux. That’s without mentioning a host of other expiring or unwanted quarterbacks. Pelissero projects a wild summer.
“There’s all these different potential landing spots,” Pelissero said. “Everybody’s going to be in this bucket. I mean, we thought last year was crazy with the trades that we saw, Russell Wilson and Carson Wentz and Matt Ryan, and I’m probably forgetting one or two. This year has the potential to be even wilder.”
The 49ers, too, will need at least one, and probably two quarterbacks going into training camp. There figure to be a lot of moving parts this offseason.
