At the end of every season, teams sign a host of players, usually from their practice squad, to reserve/future contracts.
For all intents and purposes, these are deals that keep players around to compete for a back end job in training camp.
These contracts count against the 90-man training camp limit and salary cap for next season. These players can’t be signed by another team.
On Tuesday, the 49ers announced they have signed the following 10 free agents to Reserve/Future contracts:
- DL Alex Barrett
- OL Alfredo Gutierrez
- S Tayler Hawkins
- OL Keith Ismael
- DB Qwuantrezz Knight
- WR Tay Martin
- WR Dazz Newsome
- OL Jason Poe
- LB Curtis Robinson
- OL Leroy Watson
All of the players finished the 2022 season on the team’s practice squad.
The most notable names on that list are Jason Poe and Curtis Robinson. Poe came close to making the 53-man roster this past season and Robinson did, before being stashed on injured reserve and then later being cut and added to the practice squad.
