Apparently former Giant Aubrey Huff is still raw about being replaced by Brandon Belt over a decade ago.
After Belt signed a one-year deal with the Toronto Blue Jays worth $9.3 million on Tuesday, Huff sent out a, now deleted, tweet implying that a child could put up his numbers from last year and that he doesn’t deserve his new contract.
“Anyone have a daughter that could play 1st base & hit .213 for the season with 8 home runs, 24 RBI’s, & a 0.3 WAR?” Huff wrote on Twitter. “She could make 9.3 million playing for the @Bluejays.”
If you’ll recall, Huff was the Giants’ starting first baseman until the 2012 season, when he lost the Opening Day job to the second-year Belt. Huff started the year in left field but struggled, and played in just 52 games that season. 2012 would prove to be his last season in the major leagues.
In addition to being mean spirited, there is some irony in Huff’s tweet, as pointed out by local journalist Steven Rissotto. After signing a two-year, $22 million contract with the Giants following the 2010 World Series winning season, Huff posted a below average slash-line of .239/.309/.359 and a 0.0 WAR in the next two seasons combined. Following 2012, the Giants bought out his club option, paying him $3 million to no longer be with the team.
Huff’s Twitter account was reinstated recently after being suspended during 2021 for a number of questionable tweets. It would appear the former first-baseman didn’t change much during that hiatus.
