The future of Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay is murky. This isn’t entirely new for McVay. He was offered a reported five-year, $100 million deal with Amazon last season and turned it down to stay with the Rams.
According to myriad reports, he’s going to take time to consider his future, which could include potential broadcasting gigs.
The initial report, from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, said McVay’s future is “in limbo” and that he’ll take time away from the game to consider his decision. Schefter wrote:
McVay has gone back and forth on the decision and needs time to get away to process all that has transpired over the past year: winning a Super Bowl, being courted to work in television, getting married, watching his wife’s home country of Ukraine invaded, losing his grandfather and then coaching a team that has fallen short of its expectations.
Multiple other reports, including from Ian Rapoport and Peter Schrager, who co-hosts a podcast with McVay, no decision is certain at this point. Rapoport also intimated that even if McVay were to retire and/or to take a job in broadcasting, he may eventually return to coaching.
McVay admitted this past week that he has had interest in broadcasting, whether that’s “down the line” or in the short term.
His contract continues through 2026, and if he did retire, he’d still remain contracted to the Rams, just as Sean Payton is contracted to the New Orleans Saints (who are reportedly asking for a first-round pick in any potential trade for Payton).
What is evident from all the reports is that McVay is seriously considering leaving his post and will take time to figure out what his future holds.
