The Giants added Taylor Rogers, Tyler’s twin brother, in free agency to bring in another late-inning relief option.
Rogers, 32, was an All-Star in 2021 and recorded 31 saves last season. The left-handed reliever was more effective in the first half of the season with San Diego than after the trade deadline for the Brewers, but he still has a strong track record of high-leverage success.
Rogers agreed to a three-year, $33 million contract according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. The deal is pending a physical.
There have been dozens of brothers suited up as teammates — including the Alous for the Giants — but MLB twins are extremely rare.
When the Twins traded Taylor to the Padres, Tyler joked that the move made the National League West the best-looking division in baseball. On April 11, when the Padres came to Oracle Park, the Rogers brothers played catch in the outfield and exchanged the lineup cards at home plate pregame.
That night, they became the fifth set of twins to ever play in the same MLB game. Tyler took the loss, Taylor got the save.
With Rogers, the Giants have a late-inning arm to pair with righty Camilo Doval. Doval built on his success of 2021 by adding a cutter last year, but easing up his workload and responsibilities could help his development long-term.
San Francisco’s bullpen ranked 20th in ERA last season, a significant decline from 2021. Rogers should help the unit return to form.
Rogers posted a 4.76 ERA last season for the Brewers and Padres. In his seven-year career, he’s registered 81 saves and holds an ERA of 3.42.
