If some is good, more is better?
That’s how the Los Angeles Rams have done business at the trade deadline and recent years. But the 49ers beat the Rams in the Christian McCaffrey sweepstakes a week ago, and then beat them on the field resoundingly on Sunday, with McCaffrey starring.
Now that San Francisco has pulled ahead of LA in the standings, is it time to double down?
ESPN’s Adam Schefter can’t see why not. He told the Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday that the 49ers were in on Odell Beckham last year, so he’d expect them to be in this year as well.
“I’ve said this, I’ve wondered that,” Schefter said when asked about the possibility of the 49ers pursuing Beckham by McAfee. “If they keep winning, why would they not look at him? They were interested in him last year. I think he’d like to be in LA, but look, the [49ers] could use a wide receiver. They’ve had a lot of injuries, yesterday they were down to basically [Brandon] Aiyuk. Jauan Jennings didn’t play, Deebo Samuel didn’t play. To me that’s an intriguing match, we’ll see if the two sides both feel the same way we all do.”
Beckham is currently a free agent after tearing his ACL in the Super Bowl last year, a game in which he seemed poised to win MVP. Beckham caught 44 passes for 537 yards in 14 combined games with the Browns and Rams last year. He was better in the postseason, averaging 72 yards receiving per game.
Beckham hasn’t played a full season since 2019, when he gained 1,035 receiving yards for the Browns. He’s torn the ACL in his left knee twice since then.
