The Giants made a pair of moves before Wednesday’s game in Colorado, including a surprising decision to send down a player who’s shown potential over the last month.
Outfielder Lewis Brinson has been designated for assignment to make room for infielder Jason Vosler who was called up from Triple-A Sacramento. Brinson, 28, now has to clear waivers in order to stay with the Giants organization, should he choose to.
Brinson was acquired by the Giants in a trade with the Astros on Aug. 31 for unknown compensation, and posted a .683 OPS with San Francisco in 16 games, a number that would constitute a career high. Brinson, a former first round pick of the Marlins that never panned out, was raved about by manager Gabe Kapler during his brief time with the club.
Brinson was excellent with the Astros’ Triple-A affiliate before being picked up by the Giants, launching 25 home runs with a .299/.356/.574 line in 364 plate appearances. Though Brinson showed off impressive power with the Giants, he struck out 14 times compared to just two walks, a problem throughout his career.
Additionally the Giants also optioned RHP Sean Hjelle who pitched twice in the last four days, and called up RHP Jharel Cotton, who has yet to make his debut with San Francisco. Cotton was acquired off waivers three days ago from the Twins. He has a career 4.42 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 77 appearances.
