The 49ers have three healthy quarterbacks on their roster again.
According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, San Francisco signed former Packers and Falcons QB Kurt Benkert to the practice squad on Tuesday. Benkert beat out four other QBs that included veteran Mike Glennon during a workout.
Benkert, 27, was undrafted out of the University of Virginia and spent his first three seasons with Atlanta (2018-2020). He spent last season with Green Bay and made his only appearance in an NFL game, kneeling down twice. Benkert broke the school record for passing yards in a game (455) while at the University of Virginia.
While Benkert will sit on the practice squad until either Jimmy Garoppolo or backup Brock Purdy were to get hurt, running back Marlon Mack was promoted from that squad to the active roster on Tuesday. This comes after another blow to the RB room, with Tyrion Davis-Price now out for a few weeks.
Mack joins starter Jeff Wilson Jr. and backup Jordan Mason as the third option at halfback. Deebo Samuel is also like to get a handful of carries.
