The Giants have a big offseason ahead of them, and the undertaking will begin without their general manager.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Detroit Tigers are hiring Giants general manager Scott Harris to run their team as president of baseball operations. Harris, 34, had been in San Francisco’s front office since 2020.

Harris, a Redwood City native, joined Farhan Zaidi in San Francisco after the 2019 season. He began his executive career with the Cubs, eventually becoming a top lieutenant to president Theo Epstein and GM Jed Hoyer. Harris was director of baseball operations when the Cubs won the World Series in 2016 and got elevated to assistant general manager in 2018.

Harris is well-regarded in the industry. The Mets showed interest in him last winter for their top front office job, but he reportedly withdrew his name from consideration to stay with SF.

The Tigers have a young core of former top pick Spencer Torkelson and fifth pick Riley Greene, plus promising young pitchers like Tarik Skubal and closer Gregory Soto. MLB.com recently ranked Detroit’s farm system 22nd in MLB.

Harris is leaving the Giants with roughly three weeks left in a disappointing season. The Giants are on the verge of becoming the fourth team ever to have a losing season one year after winning over 100 games. Giants chairman Greg Johnson has already voiced his commitment to Zaidi and Gabe Kapler going forward, but Harris will no longer be part of that braintrust.
