Alex Wood won’t pitch again for the Giants this season.
Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporters Sunday that Wood, who hit the injured list earlier this month with a left shoulder impingement, won’t ramp up to make another start this year. Kapler added that Wood was never cleared to resume throwing.
Wood had been pitching through the shoulder impingement, but hit the injured list on Sept. 3. He made 26 starts for San Francisco this year, posting a 5.10 ERA with an 8-12 record.
Since the Giants have been effectively eliminated from postseason contention, it didn’t make sense to push Wood to get back on the mound. SF is prioritizing allowing the southpaw to have a fully healthy winter.
“It’s not good to go into an offseason banged up,” Kapler said Sept. 3. “Because then instead of building on what you accomplished the year prior, it feels like you have to start from scratch at a later date. That’s the number one consideration.”
The 10-year veteran had been doing physical therapy in San Francisco, and rehab will presumably continue. Wood, 31, signed a two-year, $25 million contract to return to the Giants last offseason, so he’ll be back in 2023.
