Wilmer Flores is going to be sticking around for a while.
In a season that has seen so much disappointment and volatility from so many of the Giants’ veteran position players, Flores has been the picture of consistency and reliability.
That’s probably a big part of why the 31-year-old and organization are in agreement on a two-year contract extension, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The deal also includes a mutual option for a third season in 2025.
While Flores’ numbers in 2022 won’t turn any heads (.235/.319/.414) he’s provided versatility at three infield positions and as a designated hitter, while also featuring in more games — 132 — than any other Giant this season. Manager Gabe Kapler has also been a vocal supporter of his, with those around the team saying Flores is Kapler’s favorite player
Flores was one of Farhan Zaidi’s first signings in 2020, on a two-year deal worth $6.25 million. Flores has provided return on that investment, slashing above his career averages during his time in the Bay (.251/.324/.446).
Flores’ future is now secured with so many question marks surrounding other veterans on the team. Injury issues have led to considerations of retirement from the likes of both Brandon Belt and Evan Longoria. Brandon Crawford has another year left on his contract but has struggled mightily at the plate and in the field. Tommy La Stella is expected to be elsewhere next year.
Whatever happens with those players, Flores will be in Orange and Black in 2023, and could have his first base duties expanded should Belt retire or go elsewhere. He may also have a Willie Mac Award on his mantlepiece by then.
