The Farhan Zaidi Giants love to take swings on low-value, high-upside prospects, and they might as well continue to do that with this season basically down the tubes.

San Francisco made a trade on Thursday for former top 30 MLB prospect Lewis Brinson, acquiring the outfielder from the Astros for an undisclosed price.

Brinson, 28, was selected in the first round by the Texas Rangers, and was believed by many scouts to be a future star. Those lofty expectations never materialized for Brinson, who has a career slash line of .199/.248/.323 in 1111 major league plate appearances, mostly with the Miami Marlins.

Brinson has spent all of 2022 with the Astros’ minor league affiliate, slashing an impressive .299/.356/.574 with 22 home runs. Brinson has looked very good in Triple-A before, however, and has a career .917 OPS at that level.

Brinson will begin with the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate in Sacramento.
