About 15 minutes after Monday night’s game entered a delay because the lights were too dim, Journey’s “Lights” played.
At least the speakers worked.
After two innings, Giants players took the field to warm up for the top of the third. Then the umpiring crew sent them back to their dugout.
It was around 7:45 and the sun had set on the Bay. Oracle Park’s stadium lights were noticeably dimmer than usual, causing the umpires to convene and pause play after consulting with managers Gabe Kapler and Bob Melvin. The stadium lights malfunction halted the game as the Padres led 3-0.
Both teams remained in their dugouts through 8:20 p.m., about 30 minutes after the stoppage began.
The delay could impact both starting pitchers. Carlos Rodón, who allowed three runs in the first inning, entered the delay at 47 pitches. Mike Clevinger, meanwhile, had kept the Giants scoreless through two innings on 36 pitches.
Most pitchers are creatures of habit, and their routines were already disrupted Monday night. During the first inning, the game was also delayed for about 10 minutes when home plate umpire Marvin Hudson injured his leg.
