The Giants made their first move of the 2022 trade deadline during their Monday night game against the Dodgers.

San Francisco traded minor league reliever Jeremy Walker to Tampa Bay in exchange for Triple-A infielder Ford Proctor. To make room for Proctor on the 40-man roster, the Giants designated Kervin Castro for assignment.

Proctor’s positional versatility makes him a natural fit for the Giants’ organizational philosophy. In 2022, he’s played catcher, shortstop, second and third base at the Triple-A level. But he’s struggled at the plate, striking out 95 times to 44 walks and posting a .213 average.

Proctor, 25, hasn’t made his MLB debut yet and has three minor league options. The Rays picked him in the third round of the 2018 amateur draft.

Walker, the pitcher the Giants are sending out, has a 6.99 ERA in the minors this season. The 6-foot-5 righty struck out 10.1 batters per nine in the Giants’ system in 2022.

Castro, a converted catcher turned reliever, didn’t allow an earned run in 10 appearances for the Giants during their 107-win season. But in 2022, Castro has walked 24 batters and allowed 20 earned runs in 32.1 Triple-A innings.

The trade deadline is Aug. 2 at 3 p.m. Pacific Time.
