The Giants have lost a season-high seven straight, but the front office isn’t ready to quit on their 2022 postseason chances just yet.
That’s the latest from ESPN’s Buster Olney, who reported on Thursday morning that the Giants are telling teams they are not sellers, and that for the time being they are holding onto upcoming free agents Carlos Rodon and Joc Pederson.
Pederson and Rodon are considered the Giants’ two best trade chips should they choose to sell at next week’s deadline. Pederson will become a free agent this offseason while Rodon has a player option he is expected to decline.
The Giants are now two games under .500 and 3.5 games out of the final wild card spot, and deficit that is far from insurmountable. Still, San Francisco’s level of play for the last two months has not been close to that of a playoff team.
Adding insult to injury, the NL West rival Padres are now considered the favorites to acquire Nationals slugger Juan Soto in a trade according to Olney.
The Giants not selling at the deadline and then missing the playoffs, combined with San Diego landing Soto would be a short and long-term nightmare scenario for SF. If they aren’t going to sell, they better be damn sure this group can turn it around, or they need to make a big move of their own before next week’s deadline.
