The Giants announced on Friday that starting pitcher Matthew Boyd was diagnosed with a flexor strain and won’t throw again for four weeks.

Boyd ended his live bullpen session last Monday early because of discomfort in his left elbow. He’s been rehabbing from surgery to repair that left flexor tendon.

The live session represented a major step toward a return for Boyd, who posted a 3.89 ERA in 15 starts last season for the Tigers. Boyd signed a one year, $5.2 million contract with the Giants.

If Boyd ends up pitching for the Giants this season, it’ll be after the All-Star Break.

In the medical update that revealed Boyd’s setback, the Giants also announced that LaMonte Wade Jr. is expected to begin a rehab assignment with the Sacramento River Cats this weekend. The outfielder, who has been on the IL with a knee injury, was supposed to start ramping up last weekend but felt tightness in his hamstring.

With Sacramento, Wade will be joining Steven Duggar (oblique) and Anthony DeSclafani, who made his second rehab start on Thursday as he recovers from right ankle inflammation. DeSclafani allowed three earned runs in 2.2 innings on five hits and two walks.
