After taking over the news cycle for the better part of two weeks, there hasn’t been much to report regarding the Deebo Samuel-49ers situation since the NFL Draft came and went.
The draft was Samuel’s best chance to get traded away, with the 49ers refusing to do so because a) they didn’t get a great offer and b) they believe they can work out a contract extension with Samuel despite his trade request.
It’s unclear if Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch will actually be able to do that, but 49ers linebacker Fred Warner sounded very optimistic during an interview on Twitter Spaces Friday morning.
“I know that Deebo loves the team that he plays for,” Warner told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. “I know the type of teammate, the type of player that he is in that locker room, the amount of love that we have for him [and] he has for us. So I think it’s just a matter of time before something gets done.”
That’s a pretty strong statement considering most 49ers players have declined to comment on the situation. Warner says he hasn’t talked to Samuel during this process but that other members of the 49ers have
“I think [Deebo Samuel]’s been in contact with Trey Lance and George Kittle and some of the offensive guys. But it’s his process and he’s got to go through it.”
Despite Warner’s comments, Pelissero believes not much has changed with the situation.
“At this point, it is a standoff, and I would not anticipate that Deebo Samuel is going to be showing up any time particularly soon for any of the 49ers’ offseason activities,” Pelissero said.
