The 49ers don’t seem all that thrilled with the timing of Jimmy Garoppolo’s shoulder surgery. Since the surgery happened, the organization has made it clear they felt they were going to be able to deal him until Garoppolo discernibly surprised everyone by getting that surgery.
General manager John Lynch joined Tolbert & Copes on Monday to discuss everything from the draft to Deebo Samuel to Garoppolo. He doubled down on the point that San Francisco probably would not have Garoppolo on the roster right now if not for the surgery.
“I felt like we were close in some discussions and then the decision was made to have surgery and it just brought things to a screeching halt,” Lynch said. “People just don’t do that, even with a likelihood that everything’s going to be good. We continue to get calls about Jimmy.
“You don’t just let guys like that walk out the door. We either want to have Jimmy playing for us, which we’re alright with, or we want him to get the value.”
Lynch said he believes other teams will feel more comfortable dealing for Garoppolo once he starts throwing, which should happen at some point later this summer.
He continued to affirm that the 49ers are willing to “foot the bill” — as he said after the draft — for Garoppolo and keep him on the roster if need be. He said Garoppolo is excellent at navigating awkward situations because he’s so low-maintenance, and has the ability to stop those situations from being awkward.
