Just as The Star-Spangled Banner began in Oracle Park before the Giants’ Tuesday night game against the Oakland Athletics, San Francisco announced a trade.
The Giants had acquired Seattle Mariners infielder Kevin Padlo for cash considerations. Padlo, 25, will report to Triple-A Sacramento.
Padlo is a .239 hitter in eight minor league seasons, including the past three in Triple-A. He made his major league debut in 2021 for the Tampa Bay Rays before arriving in Seattle.
The corner infielder was designated for assignment by the Mariners on April 23.
San Francisco will be Padlo fourth organization. The Rockies originally drafted him out of Murrieta Valley High School (CA) in the fifth round of the 2014 amateur draft. Colorado later traded him, along with Corey Dickerson, to Tampa Bay for German Marquez and Jake McGee in 2016.
The Giants value players with experience at the high levels of the minors. In Triple-A, Padlo has hit .235 with a .799 OPS in 150 games. He went 1-for-9 with a walk and four strikeouts in 10 spring training games this year.
