Giants starter Alex Cobb left Tuesday’s game against the Mets in Citi Field in the bottom of the fifth inning with an apparent injury.
Cobb, 34, allowed a single and two doubles down the foul lines in the fifth inning. He’d also sprinted from the pitcher’s mound to cover first on a double play opportunity. Cobb shook out his right leg before athletic trainer Dave Groeschner and manager Gabe Kapler visited the righty and pulled him from the game. He was also seen grabbing at his groin area gingerly while running over to cover first in his last batter faced.
Cobb’s 4.1-inning start was the shortest for a Giants pitcher so far in 2022. He allowed four runs — three of which were earned — including the runner that Dominic Leone inherited when he replaced Cobb. Cobb struck out four and walked none but surrendered six hits.
With Cobb allowing three earned runs, the Giants’ streak of starts while limiting opponents to two or fewer earned runs to begin this season ends at nine. It was the second-longest streak recorded as a team since 1901.
Leone got the Giants out of the inning by striking out Pete Alonso, but not before the Mets tied the game, 4-4.
Cobb has failed to make at least 20 starts in three of his past five full seasons. His injury history includes Tommy John surgery, hip surgery, a procedure to remove a blood clot and a concussion. The hip surgery was on his right side — the same leg he was favoring Tuesday.
He was sitting 95 mph on his fastball in his first two starts of the year, hitting a career-high 96.3 mph at one point.
