In the third inning of a blowout, Alyssa Nakken made unexpected history on Tuesday in Oracle Park.

When first base coach Antoan Richardson was ejected by the third-base umpire, Nakken replaced Richardson at his post. In doing so, Nakken became the first woman on-field coach in a regular season Major League Baseball game.

Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer shook Nakken’s hand when she arrived in foul territory down the first base line. When the public address announcer informed the crowd of the coaching update, the Oracle Park crowd gave her a healthy ovation.

Nakken joined the Giants’ coaching staff in 2020, becoming the first full-time female MLB coach.

Nakken had previously coached third in an exhibition game in 2020, becoming the first woman to coach on the field during a game. Her jersey from that exhibition game was sent to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.

This time, she made even more history.
