It might seem like a small move, but considering Farhan Zaidi’s track record, you never know how significant it will prove to be.

The Giants acquired utility player Luke Williams from the Phillies in exchange for minor leaguer Will Toffey on Sunday. Williams, 25, was designated for assignment by Philadelphia last week. He played 58 games for the Phillies last season — his first in the majors — and hit a walk-off home run in his major league debut.

The Giants are in need of right-handed hitting, and Williams can provide that off the bench at multiple positions. Williams is a super-utility player who played every position aside from catcher for the Phillies at one point last season.

A former third-round pick out of Dana Point, CA, Williams posted a slash line of .245/.315/.316 in 108 plate appearances with the Phillies last season. He has been added to the Giants’ 40-man roster after LHP Matthew Boyd was placed on the 60-day Injured List with an elbow strain.
