For the first time since 2021, the Giants are taking the field on Friday night.
San Francisco will face the Chicago Cubs in their Spring Training opener from Arizona, and will do so with their ace Logan Webb on the hill. Behind him, the Giants are starting a lineup primarily consisting of players they’d like to get a longer look at before the season starts.
RF Mike Yastrzemski, 1B Wilmer Flores and C Joey Bart are the three players in the lineup likely to be on the Opening Day roster.
How the Giants are going to handle to catching situation this season is still thought to be up in the air. A Curt Casali-Bart timeshare could be the plan, but if one able to separate themselves, a full-time starter role is up for grabs. With that in mind, all eyes will be on Bart to see how he’s progressed since his original call up in 2020.
The lineup also features three other players Giants fans have seen at the big league level in recent years: 3B Jason Vosler, CF Jaylen Davis and SS Mauricio Dubon.
Davis is the most intriguing — and frustrating — of the three. He’s shown monster power in the minor leagues both before and after he was acquired in a trade from the Twins in 2019, but has struggled to make consistent contact at the big league level.
The rest of the lineup features three newer faces: 2B Jason Krizan, LF Luis González and DH Ka’ai Tom.
Krizan, 32, played all of 2021 with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats and posted an impressive slash line of .316/.367/.492 with 16 bombs in 110 games. González, 26, a former thrid round pick, was recently claimed off waivers from the White Sox after making just nine big league appearances with Chicago over the past two seasons. Tom, 27, was also recently signed as a free agent, and made his MLB debut in 2021, struggling at the plate in 48 games with the A’s and Pirates.
