The Giants signed catcher José Godoy off waivers from the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, the team announced.
Godoy hit .162 in 16 games for Seattle last year. When the 27-year-old made his MLB debut last May, he became the 20,000th player to ever reach the majors.
The Venezuelan catcher began his career with the Cardinals in 2012, making the Giants the third organization he’s played for.
Godoy joins a catcher room that includes Joey Bart and Curt Casali. Gabe Kapler reportedly raved about Casali’s offseason training, and the catcher told reporters he put on 15 pounds.
President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi said he envisions the catcher position as a “timeshare” between Bart and Casali.
The Giants have prioritized building catcher depth within the organization, which should be valuable for Life After Buster Posey. Patrick Bailey and Ricardo Genovés are catching prospects who may contribute at the big league level eventually.
Signing Godoy off waivers means he’ll be added to San Francisco’s 40-man roster. More moves are expected since SF appears to have to clear space for Carlos Rodón, whom reportedly agreed to a two-year, $44 million deal.
