Training camp is set to get underway this week — finally — after a tempestuous few months of CBA negotiations found a long-overdue resolution.
That means free agency is back in full swing and rosters are getting built out. San Francisco made a stunning move for former Chicago White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon on a reported two-year, $44 million deal and will surely have more moves to come.
Their neighbors to the south, the Dodgers, have made a back end roster move with a familiar face. Per MLB.com’s Juan Toribio, Los Angeles will bring in Giants reliever Reyes Moronta.
Moronta has sort of evaporated from the MLB landscape after a very impressive few years in the majors with the Giants. He posted a 2.65 ERA over 132.1 innings and was a major bullpen piece before suffering a shoulder injury in 2019 that required surgery which also ended his 2020 season.
When he did return in 2021, Moronta’s velocity was down and he suffered an elbow injury that sidelined him again. He had a horrendous time in Triple-A, posting an 11.50 ERA with 26 walks against 19 K’s over 18 innings with the Sacramento River Cats and did not get another chance with the Giants.
He will likely have to show some substantial recovery towards his pre-injury form and demonstrate improved velocity to have a viable chance to make the Dodgers’ roster.
