The Giants will honor Buster Posey’s remarkable 12-year Major League career on Saturday, May 7 with a pregame ceremony, commemorative Buster Posey collector’s print gate giveaway, and other festivities when the Giants host the St. Louis Cardinals.
It will be the first opportunity since the three-time World Series Champion and seven-time All-Star announced his retirement at the end of the 2021 season in which fans can gather to celebrate and thank Posey in person for his historic contributions to the only franchise he ever played for.
Posey announced his retirement on Nov. 3 of 2021, a surprise to many after one of the best seasons of his career. On a workload management program, the 34-year-old was more rested and hit .304 with 18 home runs — his most since 2015. Yasmani Grandal was the only catcher with at least 200 plate appearances to record a higher OPS than Posey, who was named to his seventh All-Star team.
After 12 seasons, all with the Giants, Posey finished with a career .302 average. Only 214 players — and six catchers — have ever eclipsed a .300 batting average over their career.
Although unclear at this point, president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said after Posey’s retirement presser that the club is working on arrangements to keep Posey in the organization, possibly in a front office role.
