Being a Kings fan is rough. Being their interim head coach sounds like it’s even worse.
Former Warriors assistant Alvin Gentry was beside himself when addressing the media after Sacramento’s 127-102 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday night. Gentry, who took over 17 games ago after the firing of Luke Walton, blasted the team’s ‘ridiculous’ performance’, calling it one of the worst things he’s been a part of in over three decades of NBA service.
“It’s the most disappointed I’ve been in 34 years in the NBA, I can honestly say that,” Gentry said. “That performance was absolutely ridiculous. We didn’t play hard, we didn’t compete…We didn’t guard the ball, we didn’t guard screen and rolls. We didn’t follow the game plan…No competitiveness whatsoever.
“I think anybody out there who watched understands that that performance right there was just ridiculous. I don’t know any other words to use, because we didn’t compete, we didn’t do anything. We didn’t move the basketball, we didn’t attack them, we didn’t stop their drives, we didn’t stop their screen and rolls…I’m totally disappointed and everybody in this building should be disappointed.”
The loss was Sacramento’s seventh of their past nine games. They are 7-10 under Gentry after starting the season 6-11.
The Kings started the game well, leading by a point at halftime, but collapsed in the second half, giving up a 24-5 run in under four minutes.
