With the MLB locked out, the stove isn’t exactly hot right now. Still, that didn’t stop the Giants from making a small transaction on Thursday.
San Francisco has acquired right-handed pitcher Tanner Andrews from the Braves for cash considerations. Andrews, 26, was a 10th round pick out of Purdue in 2018, and is coming off a year where he made just four appearances due to injury. He is recovering from Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss all of 2022.
The trade concludes a wild two days for Andrews, who was selected by the Braves from the Marlins organization in the fourth-round yesterday’s minor-league Rule 5 draft.
Andrews throws three pitches; a fastball that typically sits at 92-94 but tops out at 97, a slider and changeup. Andrews was projected as a middle reliever, but has spent most of his time as a starter at the Single-A level in recent years. In 2019, Andrews had a 3.50 ERA in 23 games (18 starts) and struck out 110 while walking 39 in 128 1/3 innings between the two single-A teams in the Marlins’ system.
On Wednesday, the Giants had three minor-league pitchers — left-hander Conner Menez and right-handers Jon Duplantier and Matt Seelinger — selected from them in the Rule 5 draft.
