The Giants and Gabe Kapler have agreed to a contract extension that will keep the manager in San Francisco through 2024, the team announced Friday.
Kapler helped guide the Giants to a franchise-record 107 wins in 2021, his second year at the helm. He’d previously recorded a 29-31 record with the Giants in 2020 and a 161-163 record in two seasons as the Philadelphia Phillies’ manager.
Specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Gabe has done an extraordinary job in his role as Field Manager over the past two seasons, is a key contributor to our front office, and the Giants organization takes great pride in his active engagement with the community,” president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said in a press release.
“Coming off a season in which his work and leadership were instrumental to our success, it was a high priority for us to provide a level of stability and certainty to our continued partnership. We’re thrilled about today’s announcement,” Zaidi added.
Kapler’s previous contract was set to expire after the 2022 season. The extension prevents him from becoming a lame duck skipper next season.
Kapler, 46, is considered the frontrunner for the 2021 Manager of the Year Award. In 2021, he masterfully combined analytics and interpersonal skills to make the Giants most surprising team in MLB; most preseason projections pegged SF as a middling team that would finish in the bottom half of the National League West.
“I’m honored to work for the San Francisco Giants and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue to build on the work of the last two years,” Kapler said. “There is nowhere I’d rather be, and I am excited to continue preparing with the entire organization.”
