The Oakland A’s continue to make their offseason decisions discernibly with the aim to exhaust their fans. After years of allowing their team’s best players to depart, they’ve now lost their manager.

Melvin will take his talents down to Southern California. According to MLB.com’s AJ Cassawell, the Padres have agreed with Melvin on a three-year deal.

Perhaps the most head-scratching part of this news is that Melvin, who turned 60 on Thursday, was under contract for 2022, after his 10th-straight season in Oakland, and is simply being allowed to leave.

To make matters worse, it appears there will be no compensation for Oakland. The organization will allow Melvin to walk out the door for free, per The Athletic’s Dennis Lin. After a decade, Melvin is leaving the A’s on his own terms, and the A’s are letting it happen without a fight.
