Jimmy Garoppolo was supposed to “give it a go” at the 49ers’ final practice of the week on Friday. At the start of practice, he was not present, and both Trey Lance and Nate Sudfeld were the only two quarterbacks active.

This comes after Kyle Shanahan said Thursday on KNBR that Garoppolo, “wants to give it a go tomorrow, so we’ll see him out on the practice field tomorrow. If he looks good then he’ll have a shot, if he can’t, then we’ll shut him down.”

General manager John Lynch said early Friday morning on KNBR that Garoppolo has, “… been living in the training room. Trying to get out there today. I think today’s critical; if it’s not today then we then we go with Trey.”

At this point, it’s a formality for Shanahan to give the official word that Garoppolo is out and Lance will make his first career start.

Also seen at the start of practice were D.J. Jones (knee — did not practice Thursday), Javon Kinlaw (knee — limited Wednesday and Thursday) and Elijah Mitchell (shoulder — limited Wednesday and Thursday). George Kittle was in uniform for the first time this week, but did not appear to be practicing in full.
