With a rotation that is crumbling against a Dodgers team that is peaking, the Giants will need all the help they can get this weekend.
Luckily, they might have two key infielders at their disposal for the three game set vs. LA that will determine who continues into September with the lead in the NL West. Giants President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi told KNBR on Friday that he expects both Evan Longoria and Tommy La Stella to make their return to the field this weekend.
“We’re hoping both guys maybe even as soon as (Friday),” Zaidi said. “They’re kind of in that dreaded day-to-day territory. You know they want to be there as much as anybody wants them to be out there. If there’s any hesitation on their part you don’t want to risk re-injury or having the lingering issues they’ve had affecting their performance.
“But we’re hoping they’re going to be active in this series and maybe as soon as (Friday). They’d both be a huge boost.”
Longoria has been out since Aug. 18 after being hit on the hand while swinging at a pitch. Longoria reportedly received a cortisone shot on Monday and is feeling better.
La Stella, who has missed significant time this season, was knocked out again on Sunday with side soreness. If healthy, La Stella could be in the lineup on Friday, considering the Dodgers just announced that right-hander Corey Knebel will get the start.
