Well, that didn’t take long.
In his second ever pass attempt as a member of the 49ers, Trey Lance threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Trent Sherfield in Saturday’s preseason opener. Lance rolled out to his left as a decoy, before launching a dime about 45 yards down the field to Sherfield, who took it the rest of the way.
It’s quite the start for the No. 3 overall pick, who has been the buzz of training camp. Lance has outplayed Jimmy Garoppolo by most accounts in the lead-up to Saturday’s preseason opener, and the odds of the rookie beating out Garoppolo for the starting job certainly didn’t take a hit after Saturday’s first half.
Garoppolo played in just the first series of the game, completing three short passes before the 49ers punted.
