You can never have too many linebackers, apparently. The 49ers seem to have a fairly deep linebacker corps, but towards the tail end of their preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, it was reported that they’re adding another linebacker.

With Azeez Al-Shaair (knee sprain) and Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (concussion protocol) still out, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that the team will be adding former Seahawks linebacker Mychal Kendricks.

Kendricks, age 30, played for the Washington Football Team last year, spending the two prior years with Seattle. After the game, Shanahan said he knew the 49ers had worked him out but wasn’t sure if the team had signed him. He hadn’t had a chance to ask general manager John Lynch about it, but raved about Kendricks.

“I’ve played against Mychal for a long time,” Shanahan said. “Going back to when I was in the NFC East, going against him in Philly all the time. He’s done a hell of a job in Seattle these last couple years. We’ve gotten banged up a little bit at linebacker and he was out there. We were hoping to bring him in and have some competition, and hopefully add some depth, too.”
