Giants trade for familiar face, acquire Tony Watson from Angels

SAN FRANCISCO – The Giants and Angels completed a trade today with the Giants welcoming LHP Tony Watson back to San Francisco and LHP Sam Selman, RHP Ivan Armstrong and RHP Jose Marte joining the Angels organization.

This season for the Angels, Watson was 3-3 with a 4.64 ERA (17er, 33.0ip) with 25 strikeouts in 36 games while limiting opposing hitters to a .207 average (.203 vs. RHB and .213 vs. LHB). Over his last 12 games, Watson has posted a 2.25 ERA (3er, 12.0ip) with nine strikeouts while holding opposing hitters to a .146 average against.

Watson, 36, returns to the Giants after spending the 2018-2020 seasons in San Francisco and posting a 3.20 ERA (49er, 138.0ip) with 128 strikeouts in 153 games. During his time in SF, Watson held opposing hitters to a .236 average (.218 vs. RHB and .267 vs. LHB).

In his 11-year career, Watson is 43-28 with a 2.90 ERA and 551 strikeouts in 663 career games. Prior to the shortened 2020 season, Watson had pitched in at least 60 games in each of the previous eight seasons from 2012-2019.

Selman made seven appearances at the Major League level for SF and was 0-0 with a 4.50 ERA (4er, 8.0ip) while also making 17 appearances (two starts) for Triple-A Sacramento and going 1-0 with a 4.03 ERA. In 41 career Major League relief appearances, Selman is 1-1 with a 4.06 ERA (17er, 37.2ip).

Armstrong was 4-1 with a 1.88 ERA (8er, 38.1ip) and 43 strikeouts in 20 games for Low-A San Jose.

Marte spent time with both High-A Eugene and Double-A Richmond in 2021, combining to go 2-0 with a 2.79 ERA (9er, 29.0ip) in 24 relief appearances (five with Eugene and 19 with Richmond).
