As the summer rolls on, we’ve arrived at the jersey talk stage of the offseason. The 49ers announced last week that they’ll don their 1994 throwback jerseys in six games next season. Those jerseys are actually throwbacks to the 1955 season, when the 49ers wore the iconic red fits shown above.
According to the 49ers’ chief marketing officer, Alex Chang, in an interview with Jeff Kerr of CBS Sports, the 49ers are considering completing the look. A new NFL rule will allow teams to use alternate helmets starting in 2022, which could mean a complete 1955 throwback.
“There’s really two options for us,” Chang said. “Stick with the ’94 helmet, which we’re already using today and we love that look — or a 1955 helmet which was a red helmet with a silver stripe and face mask. We’re looking at both.”
The 1994 helmet is actually the same as the 49ers’ current helmet, but with a throwback decal, which doesn’t require league approval, whereas the 1955 helmet would be a completely unique helmet.
In order to use either alternate helmet in the 2022 season, the 49ers will have to notify the league by July 31.
