One of the very few bright spots of the 2019-20 season was Kerry Hyder. Back with his old defensive line coach from Detroit, Hyder broke out with a team-leading 8.5 sacks and looked set to earn himself a well-deserved payday.
He did just that, but it doesn’t quite seem like the slam dunk that it was initially reported as. According to Pro Football Talk, it’s actually two-year, $6.5 million deal, with a $10 void year in year three. Regardless, those two years would more than double Hyder’s previous career earnings of $4.3 million, per OverTheCap.
With Hyder departing, though, the 49ers will retain some edge depth. The 49ers announced they re-signed Jordan Willis to a one-year deal on Tuesday. Willis finished with 2.5 sacks last season, a career-high for a single season (he’d previously had a single sack in each of his three prior seasons).
Willis was acquired in a midseason trade with the Jets last season, with San Francisco sending their sixth-round pick in 2021 to the Jets in exchange for the Jets’ seventh-round pick (No. 230) this year. With the 49ers giving up their original seventh-rounder to the Eagles due to the Marquise Goodwin situation, that pick is their only seventh-round pick in this year’s draft.
