Greg Papa reported the offer that the 49ers have on the table for free agent Trent Williams, and he’s concerned. The 49ers play-by-play announcer revealed the offer at the top of Tuesday’s “Papa & Lund Show,” and believes the 49ers will have to sweeten the deal if they want to land the eight-time All-Pro.
“I am a little concerned about No. 71 here,” Papa said on KNBR. “From what I’m hearing they have a four-year deal on the table for $80 million. They’ve got to come up from that which I think they will. It’s a lot to finagle, but he’s been out there now for 24 hours so that is a concern.”
Williams, 33, said on a podcast recently that folks were “barking up the right tree” if they believed the 49ers were the favorite to re-sign him, and he’s expressed his admiration for playing in Kyle Shanahan’s system. Williams has also said that he wanted to hit the open market to see what his value around the league is, and considering a number of teams are reportedly interested in him, it’s possible some are willing to pay far more than the 49ers have offered.
Williams has stated that he wants to play for six more seasons. Williams was the highest graded tackle and the second-highest graded offensive lineman in the NFL according to PFF last year.
