Sam Darnold or Zach Wilson? Greg Cosell on which quarterback he likes more

Matt Stafford as the next 49ers quarterback was an exciting prospect, but that ship has sailed. Deshaun Watson is still technically available, but the more time that passes, the more it seems like being able to acquire him is a bit of a pipe dream. Aaron Rodgers? No chance.

The remaining options are significantly less exciting. The most likely scenario is that the 49ers just roll with Jimmy Garoppolo next season. They could also bring another quarterback in to compete with and/or backup Garoppolo, something that would be a wise decision considering his injury history.

To that end, two names that have been floated are Sam Darnold, the 2018 No. 3 overall pick whose time with the Jets has been a disappointment. There’s also Zach Wilson, the rookie quarterback from BYU who could be available at No. 12, depending on how the first couple picks shake out.

NFL Films executive producer Greg Cosell joined “Papa & Lund” on Friday, and argued that if the 49ers, or anybody else, is deciding between the two, he’d go with Wilson.

“I would argue probably that I like Wilson better,” Cosell said. “They’re different a little bit, just because Darnold’s more of a physical specimen than Wilson. Wilson is a more consistently accurate thrower of the football. The offense in which he played at BYU had a lot of air raid principles so there was a lot of rhythmic timing feel to it, which I think he has a very good feel for within the context of his offense. Plus he does have second reaction movement ability which many would argue is more important than ever, although the greatest quarterback of all time does not have that ability and I think he did okay.

“I would probably say that I like Wilson’s overall skill set and traits more than Darnold’s.”
