After more than a handful of poachings, the 49ers are making additions to their coaching staff. With DeMeco Ryans a first-time defensive coordinator, San Francisco is bringing in an experienced name that Ryans is familiar with.
That name is Cory Undlin, who was the defensive backs coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2015, in Ryans’ final year as a pro. He won a Super Bowl there in 2018, and left Philadelphia for the defensive coordinator job in Detroit this year. He was fired at the end of the season.
The 49ers have hired former Lions defensive coordinator Cory Undlin as a pass game specialist/secondary coach, per source.
Undlin was on Philly’s staff when new 49ers defensive coordinator Demeco Ryans was playing with the Eagles in 2015.

Undlin, 49, has been coaching in the NFL since 2004, when he got his start as a defensive coaching assistant with the New England Patriots. Aside from his stint as an assistant special teams coach with the Cleveland Browns in 2007, he’s spent the majority of his career as a defensive backs coach. Per Yates, he’ll take a role as a pass game specialist and secondary coach with the 49ers.
