49ers fans could use a feel good story right now, and it doesn’t get much better than what Alex Smith is doing in Washington.
The former 49ers quarterback almost lost his leg, and nearly his life, due to complications following surgery to his broken tibia and fibula in 2018. Two years later, Smith is amazingly back on a football field and winning games with the Washington Football Team, handing the Steelers their first loss of the season on Monday.
Smith’s inspiring story got the attention of an old teammate, former 49er Frank Gore, who tweeted words of support after Smith got the win.

As fate would have it, Smith’s next matchup is against the 49ers, in a game San Francisco must win to keep their playoff hopes alive.
Gore, 37, is an inspirational story himself, now playing in his 16th year, almost unheard of for a running back. If the Jets can’t get a win this year, it seems likely he’ll play a 17th season, saying a few weeks ago that he can’t retire after a 0-16 campaign.
