The Dante Pettis era ended in Santa Clara on Tuesday. On Wednesday, it will re-ignite somewhere in New Jersey. The New York Giants, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, have claimed Pettis off waivers.

The former second-round pick who the 49ers traded up for in 2018 won’t be eligible to play for the Giants until next week. In exchange for the 44th (Pettis) and 142nd (D.J. Reed, now with Seattle, intercepted Jimmy Garoppolo last week) overall selections, San Francisco traded the 59th (running back Derrius Guice) and 74th (tackle Geron Christian) picks to the Washington Football Team.
Since the second half of 2019, he did not provide anything for San Francisco. Once Emmanuel Sanders was acquired in a mid-season trade with the Denver Broncos, Pettis was always on the outside looking in.
His last reception was a 21-yard touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals on Halloween last year. Since then, Pettis has been targeted four times and has zero receptions in the eight games he’s been active for.
He was inactive in the Super Bowl last year, and before Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, when he was injured on a fumbled kickoff return, he had been inactive for three-straight games.
