It seemed like it was the lowest of the lows for Dante Pettis when he was inactive for the Super Bowl, having to watch the majority of last season from the sidelines. He had an impressive training camp and spoke at length this offseason about a change in his mentality.
Since then, Pettis has played one full game, the season opener. He’s otherwise been relegated to return duties with Trent Taylor, where he’s returned for a total of 14 yards this season. He was listed on the injury report as limited on Wednesday with a knee injury, but practice in full for the remainder of the week.
Instead of Pettis, the 49ers opted to use the activated Kevin White from the practice squad. White is what most folks would call a bust, given that he’s a former seventh overall pick with 25 career receptions, 285 receiving yards and zero career touchdowns since the Chicago Bears drafted him in 2015.
Here are the 49ers inactives against the Miami Dolphins:
QB Nick Mullens
WR Dante Pettis
CB Dontae Johnson
CB Emmanuel Moseley
OL Tom Compton
TE Daniel Helm
Both Raheem Mostert and Ahkello Witherspoon are active but were listed as questionable for the game. It’s unclear what their roles will be on Sunday, but if Witherspoon does not start, the 49ers will likely lean on Ken Webster, who they signed from the Dolphins’ practice squad earlier this year. The other remaining corner option is Brian Allen, activated off their practice squad for the week along with White.
