In the 49ers’ season opener against the Arizona Cardinals, their gameday roster featured four tight ends and four wide receivers. They leaned on the commodities they had in substantial supply, and built their game plan around it.
In that game, receivers were targeted just 11 times out of the 32 pass attempts Jimmy Garoppolo threw. Dante Pettis started his only game thus far (and likely for the season) with Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel both out, and Mohamed Sanu still waiting on the East Coast for San Francisco to give him a call.
That’s a far cry from Sunday’s roster moves, with Samuel off injured reserve and on the active roster for the first time this season. All six of the receivers on the roster will be active on Sunday and just three tight ends.
The inactives are as follows, with no surprises other than Tom Compton being left out, leaving Jamar Taylor available to backup K’Waun Williams, who had a hip issue he worked through this week:
OG Tom Compton
TE Daniel Helm
LB Dre Greenlaw
QB Jimmy Garoppolo
RB Raheem Mostert
CB Emmanuel Moseley
CB Ahkello Witherspoon
