They wanted the turf gone before the first half against the New York Jets had concluded nearly two weeks ago. Since the moment the 49ers have stepped on the turf, they have wished they hadn’t. On that MetLife Stadium turf, Nick Bosa and Solomon Thomas’ seasons ended with ACL tears two plays apart.
Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a high ankle sprain and is likely to miss his second-straight game. Both Raheem Mostert and Tevin Coleman suffered sprain MCLs and Dre Greenlaw is quietly dealing with a quad issue which is also likely to sideline him this Sunday. And that was just in the team’s first time at MetLife.
Their second game there, against the Giants, saw an MCL sprain from Jordan Reed which is expected to see him placed on injured reserve by the end of this week, as well as a quad strain from Mark Nzeocha, which left him on injured reserve. Arik Armstead called for the “trash” turf to be removed after the Jets game, as did D.J. Jones.
Now, after the Broncos and Jets saw another host of injuries take hold, including an ankle injury to Broncos tight end Noah Fant, a hamstring injury to wide receiver K.J. Hamler, and most notably, this non-contact hamstring injury to Jets receiver Lawrence Cager, the alarm bell is being rung again (none of those players returned).
