Chadwick Tromp’s dream season, the joyous, 25-year-old Aruban breaking into the major leagues after seven seasons in Cincinnati’s system and becoming a Johnny Cueto favorite, is likely over.
The walking smile has a muscle strain in his right shoulder, an MRI found Tuesday, and has been placed on the 10-day injured list. With only seven games to play, only an unlikely, deep playoff run would bring him into the conversation again.
The Giants called up another personable backup in Tyler Heineman to replace Tromp, who had jammed the shoulder diving back to first base on Sunday in Oakland. He stayed in that game and caught the ninth inning Monday.
Joey Bart has had customary issues getting on the same page with a few on the Giants’ staff, Cueto included, and it was not the smoothest battery in Monday’s game. Now Heineman will take Tromp’s place and fits well as a complement, Heineman able to bat lefty and Bart a righty.
Tromp did not hit much but did have his moments, powering four homers in 64 plate appearances.
Before being demoted to Sacramento to make room for Bart, Heineman slashed .195/.283/.220 in 47 plate appearances.
Mike Yastrzemski (calf) did some assisted running on the treadmill on Monday, Gabe Kapler said before Tuesday’s Oracle Park matchup with the Rockies.
Kapler said he’s “trending in the right direction” and is optimistic he can return this year, but Yastrzemski was set to miss his fifth straight game Tuesday.
Kapler said Jeff Samardzija came through his three innings of work in Sacramento on Monday with “no concerns.” There are no formal plans for his next step, but Kapler has said he could start a game in Friday’s doubleheader.
