The Tom Brady to the 49ers rumors seemed like they were dying down. Thanks to Deion Sanders and Patriots beat writer Tom Curran, however, they are very much back in the national conversation.

It was Curran who on Tuesday indicated that the interest between the two sides is “real” during a radio hit, a comment that he subsequently walked back as more speculative than anything else.

Curran hopped on with Papa & Lund on Wednesday to clarify his comments, and interestingly said that he actually thinks these rumors have more legs after the reaction to his initial comments.

“The first elements that have to be in place are interest on both sides,” Curran explained. “The interest on Tom Brady’s side is genuine. He would love to go play for the San Francisco 49ers if he’s done in New England. That would probably be his first choice. The harder sell would be for the 49ers to move off of Jimmy Garoppolo. I’ve had sources tell me that as much as they like and admire Jimmy, there are elements to his game they don’t love. I’ve had multiple sources tell me that.

“Really when I was on with Adam Shine on Mad Dog Radio, if you listen to it he asked me ‘How would I handicap the race?’ I said ‘I’d go 50 percent Tennessee, and then as an afterthought I threw in the Niners closing hard on the outside,’ because I’d heard Deion Sanders and Mike Florio had written about it and I had talked to him offline about it. So I kind of tossed it in there it caught fire, and I was like ‘Oh boy, nice job dummy.’ Then I started to get this onslaught of ‘keep on that, keep on that, there’s something to that.’ So I have not been disabused of the idea that it might happen.

“For the Niners, you’re going to really have to try and thread the needle, and take a risk if you want that to happen.”
