SANTA CLARA – You’ve heard his voice calling Bay Area play-by-play for years, but you might not know what it looks like behind the scenes of those calls.
We followed Greg Papa around to document what went into his preparation and gameday routine during his broadcast of the 49ers vs. Rams Week 16 matchup at Levi’s Stadium. From meeting with Emmanuel Sanders on the Thursday before the game, to his final call of (SPOILER ALERT) Robbie Gould’s game-winning field goal as time expired, we wanted to share what goes into the finished product you can hear every gameday on our airwaves.
“When I’m doing the game, I think of someone who is sightless. Someone that is going solely off of what I’m telling them. The roar of the crowd. The whole audio presentation we bring to them,” Papa said. “The game is going to take you on a roller coaster. Just ride with it and make it as enjoyable as you possibly can for everyone listening.”
