Former NBA commissioner David Stern remains in serious condition after emergency surgery to address a brain hemorrhage he suffered on Thursday. Stern was admitted to a New York City hospital after the fire department responded to a 911 call at a restaurant at 1:59 PT ET.
“He is receiving great care and surrounded by his loved ones,” the league said in a statement on Tuesday.
Stern, 77, served as the NBA commissioner from 1984-2014 and oversaw an unprecedented expansion in the league both domestically and abroad. Under Stern the league expanded from 23 to 30 teams, increased revenue 40 times, and saw the value of both player contracts and franchise valuations skyrocket.
Stern also formed the WNBA in 2014.
